Cosabella: Empowering women, every day
As a company founded by a woman with the intention of empowering other women, we here at Cosabella are extremely excited for International Women’s Day of 2017. With the majority of women in major leadership positions here at the company, Cosabella is a shining beacon of the amazing things that women can accomplish. In this post, we are highlighting three amazing women from Cosabella who inspire all of us here, every single day.
A Brief History of International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women’s Day, is celebrated on March 8th every year. In different regions of the world, the focus of the celebrations are meant to show respect, appreciation, and love towards women for their economic, political, and social contributions and achievements. An effective Women’s Day was the 1975 Icelandic women’s strike which paved the way for the first female president in the world: Vigdís Finnbogadottir.
In some regions, the day has less political flavor and is simply an occasion for people to express their love for women in a way somewhat similar to a mixture of Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day. In other regions, the political and human rights theme designated by the United Nations runs strong political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner. Some people celebrate the day by wearing purple ribbons.
The earliest celebration was held as a Socialist political event in 1909 in New York City. Declared a national holiday in the Soviet Union in 1917, it spread to other nearby countries and is now celebrated in many Eastern countries.
The Women of Cosabella reflect on what International Women’s Day means to them:
Kristen Bear
Head Designer at Cosabella
“Women’s day is so important because although it has been a day recognized since the early 1900s, to me- it is a reminder that we still have such a long way to go. It is a day that does not only belong to women, but all people who care for and will continue to make their voices heard for basic human rights”
“Working as the head designer for Cosabella, I am able to create empowering product for women every day and I love to think about how wearing our product will make them feel- sexy, beautiful, confident, strong. So even though we’re not quite “there” yet, I think the future for girls is now looking the brightest it’s ever been and that itself is a huge reason to celebrate!’
Valeria Campello
Founder, Senior Vice President and CXO
“I believe in equality and if we need one day to celebrate us as women it means we still have a long road to be empowered and recognized by men as equal members of our family and the society. I hope one day special days and parades aren’t necessity and as a society, we can embrace equality and just celebrate and enjoy life”
Silvia Campello
President & COO Cosabella
“My son asked me if I was the boss or if his father was the boss of him. I told him that we are both the boss. He, then, proceeded to tell me, that ‘No, mamma, you are the boss’ ”
